Aspart of the series New ecophilosophies, we invite you to a meeting devoted to the book "Three Ecologies" by Félix Guattari. Written in 1989, this concise and still extremely topical manifesto of ecosophy is one of the key, if not the founding work of environmental humanities. The author, a French philosopher particularly known for his cult books 'Anti-Oedipus' and 'A Thousand Plateaus' written in duo with Gilles Deleuze, was also a psychoanalyst, co-founder of the close anti-psychiatry movement of institutional psychotherapy, and an activist. In The Three Ecologies, Guattari analyses with bardic perspicacity the seeds of the current ecological crisis, which, he shows, cannot be considered in isolation from the social and mental health crises (following the title by pointing out the inseparability of the three registers: environmental ecology, social ecology and mental ecology). The author, however, does not stop at gloomy diagnoses and, with Spinozian persistence, points to lines of outlet and possibilities of opposition within what he calls a new ethical-aesthetic paradigm.
The meeting will be attended by philosopher Bartosz Kuźniarz and Jędrzej Brzeziński, philosopher and translator of The Three Ecologies.
Jędrzej K. Brzeziński - translator, mainly of French philosophical literature, and philosopher, affiliated with the Polish Academy of Sciences and the University of Białystok. Born in Białystok.
Bartosz Kuźniarz - philosopher, essayist and translator. Author of the books "Money and the System. On the Devil in the Economy" (Krakow 2006), "Goodbye Mr. Postmodernism. Social Theories of the Late Left Thinkers" (Toruń 2011) - published in English as "Farewell to Postmodernism. Social Theories of the Late Left' (Frankfurt am Main 2015) - and 'King of Numbers. Sketches from the Metaphysics of Capitalism' (Warsaw 2020). He works as a professor in the Department of Social and Contemporary Philosophy at the University of Bialystok. Since 2024, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Cognitive Science at the University of Bialystok. From 2022 to 2024, he was editor-in-chief of Culture.pl. From 2025, editor-in-chief of the journal 'Civitas. Studies in Philosophy of Politics'.
About the series New eco-philosophies
The prefix 'eco' is surprisingly indiscriminate: for a decade now it has been making a dizzying career in universities, art galleries and marketing specialists. Philosophy is no exception. The aim of our meetings is to introduce the reflections that have emerged in recent years among philosophers in relation to the environment. What obligations do we have towards animals and the natural world as a whole? What are they based on? What principles should guide us? What can philosophy do in the face of the climate crisis? How can we combine ethical reflection with social and ecological knowledge?
